The term harem anime refers to an animation series with the primary persona who has some romantic relationship with two or more other characters. The main character is usually male, and the others are female. The opposite is accurate, and harems of the same sex, but they are not as expected. The genre has an essential crossover with the ecchi anime because it tends to involve extreme levels of fan service. One of the most significant problems with anime harem, apart from the blatant objectification of women that is endemic to gender. It’s because some of the protagonists are annoying. These are some of the worst anime characters out there, and they make for some of the worst anime buddies. Kirito isn’t anyone’s favorite character on Sword Art Online. And if you remember Love Hina, you don’t know what happened to Keitaro.
This could be because the intended audiences for most anime harem are straight men and teenagers casting themselves on the male main character. What about teenage girls with Twilight’s Bella? The projection is much simpler when the protagonist is a blank slate. That’s not a good story. Or, at the very least, non horrible animated relationships to project upon. Unfortunately, many of those anime heroes are so blunt they shouldn’t have harems.
Makoto Itou From School Days
- School Days comes to an end with Makoto’s harem killing him. One might think there is something in him to make him worthy of this passion. There is no such thing. Makoto’s primary personality trait is his propensity to mislead (and manipulate) women.
- Guy’s dating a girl in front of some other girl he’s supposed to have pregnant. He has sex with multiple girls concurrently despite clearly indicating they did not sign on for polyamory. In comparison, that makes Makoto a little… unique as the protagonist of the harem. There’s not much for him apart from the general bullshit. We expect the viewer to have mercy on him when he gets killed. There’s only so much empathy.
Riku Aoba From Tokimeki Memorial Only Love
- Riku is a teenager trying to get used to living in a new school. Throughout history, he developed numerous romantic interests. However, it does not establish a particularly significant relationship with any of them after a string of absurd adventures that imply that he gets sued at school for wearing cat ears (among other things). Eventually, he makes his choice.
- The girl he chooses is Sayuri, which is as bland as he is, if not more. Moreover, they do not vow eternal love for each other or embrace or even hold hands. The show concludes with the email address of Riku learning Sayuri. It’s not emotionally resonant.
Keitaro Urashima From Love Hina
- Having failed his university entrance examinations, Keitaro Urashima became the director of his grandmother’s women’s building. He met with a group of women and became the most unprofessional building director in history. They all have a bit of a crush on him, and he travels regularly, and lands face to face in their cleavage.
- He marries Naru Narusegawa. Keitaro marries him because his only characteristic is his desire to be reunited with his best friend from childhood. That turns out to be Naru. The fact that she strikes him in the face all the time is nonsense.
Yuto Amakawa From Omamori Himari
- Yuto Amakawa is an orphan whose parents bequeathed him a magic relic before passing away. His childhood friend (oddly of the same age) takes care of him since he is an orphan. The relic has something to do with her genetic destiny as a demon killer. It finds itself surrounded by demonic girls with big eyes. They’re all crazy about him.
- So, what are Yuto’s unique personal characteristics to inspire such ardor? One. He has an allergy to cats. This makes her coexistence with a cat demon slightly problematic. That’s it. When the one thing that makes you different from anyone else on the planet can be erased with a couple of Claritins. You know what’s wrong with you.
Ataru Moroboshi From Urusei Yatsura
- Instead of having his harem, Ataru is in desperate need of it.
- Despite that, Ataru continues to try to collect harem limbs, cheerfully beating anyone with a vagina and pulse. It’s a wonder he didn’t die before the show ended, and it’s an ongoing mystery why Lum loves him so much. Just because he doesn’t have the harem he’s looking for isn’t mysterious.
Rito Yuki From To LOVE Ru
- As the majority of the protagonists of the harem.
- Rito is a “well-meaning” and “good-natured” boy who constantly grabs girls’ private parts “by accident” or “in his sleep.” The series takes the horror trope so far that he sees a doctor about it.
- That doctor describes it as “Cataplectic Indecency Syndrome.” Eagle eyes amongst you have probably noticed that this is not real. This is an excuse for a teenager to attack sexy girls for the pleasure of the worst kind of anime fan.
- In addition to leading a life of sexual predator, Rito is engaged to an extraterrestrial princess called Lala Satalin Deviluke. This happens incidentally as well. Unfortunately for Rito, he’s in love with a human daughter named Haruna. Fortunately, Lala’s younger sister, Momo (who also loves Rito). There is a solution! Rito can form a real harem because polygamy is legal on their planet. That means Rito can be with Lala, Haruna, Momo, and almost everyone else on the show. ‘Cause who doesn’t want to be with a guy who keeps catching them “by mistake?” Oh, that’s true—any woman of her right mind.
Yoichi Karasuma From Samurai Harem
- With a track like Samurai Harem, you can probably guess that the main character is not exactly a jewel. Yoichi Karasuma is a martial art student at the family dojo Ikaruga. Three of the four Ikaruga sisters are romantically and sexually interested in Yoichi. The only person who doesn’t is a ten-year-old girl.
- You could give them credit for that, except that the show does a great deal to her huge 10-year-old breasts. So yeah, you know something, no credit on this account. The main attribute of Yoichi seems to be to bleed from the nose when he sees or does something vaguely gender-related. As most fans know, nosebleeds are supported for erections in anime. The main character of Yoichi is, therefore, the erection.
Tsukune Aono From Rosario + Vampire
- Tsukune is an ordinary kid who attends a school of monsters and demons called Yokai Academy. I don’t think any human school would accept that, given his bad grades. It seems that demon school has very low academic standards. Once there, Tsukune meets several monster girls who fall in love with him despite his incapacity to do just about everything. He’s not particularly strong or clever as far as humans are concerned.
Kirigaya Kazuto From Sword Art Online
- Whereas Sword Art Online does not properly fall into the harem genre, it meets the requirement to feature several women in contention for the affections of a very dull young man. Girls who love Kirito will do everything for him, including providing him with unlimited free blacksmith services.
- Kirito doesn’t usually express an opinion about anything. A flat affect and weak emotional intelligence can make a convincing character, but this must be done correctly. Its Hot Subject discount aesthetic and its failure to add humor or pathos to the show.
Tenchi Masaki From Tenchi Muyo
- A way to translate the title of Tenchi Muyo is No Need For Tenchi, and this feeling is right. Despite being beloved by a harem of beautiful extraterrestrial ladies who constantly fight for domination. There’s no need for Tenchi.
- It’s just a bit here, humbly trying to pacify Ryoko and Ayeka as they use it to feed their rivalry. How does Tenchi finally resolve the issue of several alien women in contention for his affection? Marriage to all of them. God forbid the most annoying character in the series should make up his mind.
Raku Ichijō From Nisekoi
- Nisekoi is, in a way, a refreshed version of Love Hina. The two of them have annoying, ignorant protagonists looking for a childhood friend whose name they cannot recall. The beloved Raku kid has a key that opens a necklace pendant. As Prince Charming searches for a matching foot with a glass slipper, Raku tries to find the girl whose key matches his lock. Surprise, he does not find one but four girls with matching legends and childhood stories that correspond to her love.
- Raku is heir to a family of yakuzas, so to be honest. He shouldn’t be so annoying despite her objectively interesting background. She’s a chicken who doesn’t know what happens 90% of the time. Many of his internal monologues, and hence his interior life. They consist of yelling at the fact that girls are cute while staring at their boobs.
Keima Katsuragi From The World Only God Knows
Keima is misanthropic who detests others to the point of escaping into a virtual world. He prefers women in two dimensions over real ones because real women have too many flaws. Although this montage may be interesting if correctly executed, the number of women who fall in love with Keima despite her disdain for them is deeply troubling. Misanthropy and misogyny are real things, and they don’t just lead to sitting alone in your room playing a video game. They may lead to the death of women.
